Understanding WebCenter Suite by OracleWebCenter Suite: WebCenter Suite is Oracle's offering of all of their Portal offerings. This includes WebLogic Portal, WebCenter Interaction, Oracle Portal and Oracle WebCenter Portal. Additionally it includes Secure Enterprise Search, UCM, and Oracle BPEL Process Manager. WebCenter Suite provides ultimate flexibility in terms of license migration and upgrades and even product switching.
All of the software components that are included in WebCenter Suite are not built on the WebCenter Framework. This is an important distinction especially if you are coming from a WebCenter Interaction background. WebCenter Interaction, formely known as BEA Aqualogic or Plumtree is part of the WebCenter Suite but is not built on the WebCenter Framework.

The WebCenter VM from OTN is great except that it doesn't come with WebCenter Spaces pre-configured. To fix this see my previous post. Once you have your WebCenter Portal extended with WebCenter Spaces, you will want to extend the existing vmctl.sh script to support easy start/stop of your WL_Spaces Managed server. In these next easy steps I will explain how to do this.
1. Open a command prompt in your VM and cd to /home/oracle and make a backup of the vmctl.sh file
cp vmctl.sh vmctl.sh.bak
2. open vmctl in an editor such as...

Oracle in my humble opinion is really great about providing all you can eat product that is downloadable and ready to go. If you want to get up to speed on the latest portal technology from Oracle, Webcenter 11G, then I suggest first starting with a download from OTN of the pre-configured 11G Webcenter Portal. The Virtual Machine is great and comes loaded with everything you need to get started.
